Millie Rachael Stirling , a former code-cracker at Bletchley Park during the war, discovered that a recent murder in San Francisco included the same mysterious symbol that graced the hand of a similar victim who was offed during an introductory flashback. Well, he essentially caught himself, having revealed himself and his conspirators in one hilariously rushed and jumbled scene that the heroines stumbled into quite by accident. So, Millie turns to her old crime-fighting colleague Jean Julie Graham , who just so happens to have communicated with a code-breaker in San Francisco known as Major Sixth. There they are joined by North American code-breakers Iris and Hailey who, like their British counterparts, find themselves undervalued and overlooked despite their indispensable contributions to the war effort. Set 14 years after the excellent 'The Bletchley Circle' series from a few years ago, this is not strickly about code breaking, but is instead about a cryptic serial killer that killed in England during the war and is now linked to killings in San Francisco. A few years after the joint work on the last case, Gene and Milli go to San Francisco. I should note that The Bletchley Circle — much like the original series that was axed several years ago to the detriment of nobody — exists in a strange pocket dimension where serial murderers conveniently leave codes knocking around that explain all their schemes.
Several years after their joint work on the last case Jean and Millie go to San Francisco. And when I say easy to track, I really mean it — they caught him in this, only the second episode.
It had all the classics, from the disinterested police officer to the property developer who wanted to flatten a predominantly-black neighbourhood in the name of urban renewal. Spin-off of The Bletchley Circle Jean and Millie depart London for San Francisco to investigate the murder of a close friend. One could always, I suppose, open a history book — or their eyes. In lieu of official support, Iris and Hailey turn, of course, to Millie Rachael Stirling and Jean Julie Graham , between whom a slight rift is occurring, as the former would like to remain in San Francisco and build a new life there. Who will the killer be and how will our heroines triumph in the face of misogyny, racism and murder? I wouldn't put it passed him. Summary The Bletchley Circle: San Francisco is embarrassingly bad. Her name is Charlotte Jordana Largy , the dissatisfied wife of Howard Paul McGillion , an inordinately tidy bespectacled introvert who immediately becomes the prime suspect in what the local police are predictably describing as an open-and-shut hit-and-run. It was nice of him to do their work for them, anyway, especially after the women had spent most of The Bletchley Circle: San Francisco being patronised by various cackling evildoers. There they will again have to apply brilliant skills and abilities to find a serial killer, meet the same unordinary women and unite with them in the investigation, achieve justice and rediscover their capabilities. Four women of high intelligence, a capacity for pattern recognition and a knack for decryption, use their skills to solve murders overlooked by police. With renewed purpose, the code-breaking team will stay in San Francisco and continue to solve mysteries together in the Bay Area. After the first episode, I'm not sure if the killer is supposed to be the Zodiac killer, but they are definitely leaning in that direction with taunting letters to the police and cryptic symbols and clues in the taunts.
