Humphrey Bower has raised the bar for all readers. Shantaram was so full, and so complete, the ending felt deeply satisfying. Sadly, the project ran into so many problems, they finally canceled it. Milo has had 9,995 chances so far and has just five more lives to earn a place in the cosmic soul. I listened part way to the audio book.
The story is engaging most of the time. I literally walked down the aisles of the book store looking for something thick and meaty, when I found Shantaram. Shartaram is definitely in my top five. He also wrote the original screenplay for the movie adaptation of Shantaram 2011 as well as the screenplay for the 2008 film Allegra, which is about the modern slave-trade of women.
I live in Bombay and the way David's has described Bombay is completely mesmerizing and poetic in a way. Much has been said and written about Shantaram. At the same time, the book does make you raise eyebrows more than once as our main character sometimes seems like a superhero — living in the Mumbai slums. Though the story is really incredible, most of the good stuff was in Part 1. This book is simply amazing! The keys to unlock the mysteries and intrigues that bind Lin are held by two people.
Humphrey Bower, winner of multiple Earphones Awards and the prestigious Audie Award for best narration, is a writer, actor, and director. But thanks to your providence, we managed to find ten grams of A-grade snow - and , given the real bad drought on the streets, that was a mighty slick piece of work on your part, God, if you'll accept my professional admiration. I thoroughly enjoyed Shantaram and was sorry when it was over. If you can listen to the first portion and don't mind not knowing what happens in the end, that's probably optimal. Shantaram has provided me with the richest reading experience to date and I don't expect anybody to unseat its all-round performance for a long time. It is controversial because it is reported to be somewhat based on the author's real experiences in escaping prison in Australia and living in Bombay.
I just finished a couple of minutes ago and am still in euphoric shock. The search leads him to war, prison torture, murder, and a series of enigmatic and bloody betrayals. He is evidently brave, loyal, passionate, generous, and talented. Signing off now, but keeping the line open, as always, I'll say Amen. I enjoy many a long book. But this was just plain too long for its content.
He was a heroin addict and convicted bank robber who escaped from Pentridge Prison and fled to India where he lived for ten years. I haven't read a single author whose description comes even close to the way David's describe it. Roberts lived in Melbourne, Germany and France, and finally returned to Mumbai, where he set up charitable foundations to assist the city's poor with health care coverage. In the wild, souped-up vision of Les Bohem - the acclaimed, Emmy-winning writer of the Steven Spielberg miniseries, Taken - the world is at the end stage of long-range plot that involves a gigantic genetic-engineering project. I read the back, and was hooked immediately, just reading about the author. Sure, the writing is sometimes not very good.
Shantaram is narrated by Lin, an escaped convict with a false passport who flees maximum security prison in Australia for the teeming streets of a city where he can disappear. The first is Khader Khan: mafia godfather, criminal-philosopher-saint, and mentor to Lin in the underworld of the Golden City. Their plan: to spend a secluded summer month in a haze of inspiration and creativity. I'm just not looking forward to listening to the same day to day goings on.
However, Gregory David Roberts has been accused of exploiting the real people that his characters are based on and of making promises to the slum dwellers in Mumbai that he never follows through on. Asha, a woman of formidable wit and deep scars from a childhood in rural poverty, has identified an alternate route to the middle class: political corruption.
